Human rights lawyer and public interest litigator, Inibehe Effiong, has raised concerns over the involvement of law enforcement authorities in matters relating to consumer reviews, citing specific cases involving individuals who shared feedback on products.
Effiong spoke during an interview on Channels Television on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, where he referenced incidents involving individuals who had reviewed goods and subsequently had encounters with the police.
Referring to one case, he said, “In the case of Love Doshima, the woman who made a review about bread, she did not even mention the brand.” He added, “But a woman comes out and says, oh, I am BON bread, this is my product, even though her product was not mentioned.”
He continued, “Because I am the one identifying the product, what does she do? She sends a pre-action letter to the lady on Friday.” He further stated, “By Monday, the police were inviting her. She honors the invitation, they detained her.”
Effiong noted that legal intervention followed the incident, saying, “It took our intervention to get the IG to order her release.”
He also referenced another ongoing matter, stating, “You are aware of the case of Chioma Udo Okoli, that has been going on since 2023.” He added, “I am also representing her, I cannot speak on that because it is in court.”
