In a recent interview shared by Channels Television, Obafemi George expressed strong views on Nigeria’s evolving security framework, emphasizing the urgent need for structural reforms to address persistent insecurity across the country.
He stated during the programme that, "I strongly believe state police will be a game-changer when it comes to security in Nigeria." George highlighted the limitations of the current centralized policing system, noting that it has struggled to effectively respond to the diverse and complex security challenges facing different regions.
According to him, the constitutional structure places significant responsibility on state governors for maintaining peace and order, yet does not provide them with adequate control over security apparatus within their domains.
He argued that this disconnect has contributed to inefficiencies in tackling crimes such as kidnapping, banditry, and communal violence.
George stressed that a more localized approach to policing would enhance responsiveness, intelligence gathering, and community trust.
George further explained that state police would allow for better coordination between local authorities and security personnel, ensuring that policies and actions are tailored to the specific needs of each state.
He also noted that ongoing discussions among policymakers indicate a growing consensus on the need for reform.
While acknowledging concerns about potential abuse, he maintained that proper regulation and accountability mechanisms could address such risks, making state policing a viable solution to Nigeria’s security challenges.
