Egg prices in Nigeria have jumped sharply, with a crate now selling for as high as N8,500 in many areas.
The Chairman of the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Lagos chapter, Mojeed Iyiola, says the increase is mainly due to a shortage of day-old chicks needed for poultry farming.
According to him, farmers cannot get day-old chicks anymore, hatcheries are fully booked, prices for chicks keep rising every week
and many old laying birds have already been sold
Because of this, egg production has dropped, leading to scarcity across the country.
Before now, a crate of eggs sold between N5,500 and N6,500, but prices have now risen to between N6,500 and N8,500.
In some markets, eggs are now even more expensive than chicken or beef.
The situation may continue if farmers don’t get access to chicks soon.
