The Federal Government has announced a major shake-up in Nigeria’s education system, introducing a Learner Identification Number (LIN) for pupils and plans to scrap the common entrance examination.
📌 What’s Changing?
Every child will now be assigned a unique LIN from primary school, allowing authorities to track their academic journey and monitor school transitions nationwide.
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, revealed that this move is aimed at tackling Nigeria’s alarming dropout rate.
🗣️ “If a child is expected to be in JSS1 and is not there, we will know and find out why,” he stated.
📉 Shocking Reality
Out of over 23 million pupils in public primary schools, only about 3 million move on to junior secondary school—raising serious concerns about access and retention.
📚 Goodbye Common Entrance?
The traditional common entrance exam may soon be phased out and replaced with Continuous Assessment (CA)—a system that evaluates pupils based on performance from Primary 1. Even if a student transfers schools, their academic record moves with them.
🍲 School Feeding Programme Returns?
To boost enrollment, the FG is also considering reviving the school feeding programme—this time under the Ministry of Education for better management.
