Sharia police in Aceh, Indonesia, on Thursday caned a man and a woman 140 times each for having sex outside marriage and consuming alcohol—one of the harshest punishments recorded in recent years under the region’s Islamic law.
Aceh is the only province in Indonesia that enforces a version of sharia law, where sexual relations between unmarried couples are strictly prohibited.
The punishment was carried out in a public park, with the couple struck on their backs using a rattan cane as dozens of onlookers watched, according to an AFP reporter at the scene.
During the caning, the woman reportedly fainted after enduring her punishment and was rushed to an ambulance for medical attention.
The incident has reignited debate over public corporal punishment, human rights, and religious law enforcement in the deeply conservative province.
