The Rivers Elders and Leadership Forum has strongly condemned the impeachment notice issued against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Ordu, by members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
In a statement signed by former Deputy Governor and Acting Chairman of the Forum, Gabriel Toby, the elders said impeachment should not be used as a political weapon.
The Forum described impeachment as a serious constitutional process, not something to be used for personal or factional fights.
They said the reasons given for the impeachment were weak and lacking substance, adding that they do not serve the public interest or follow constitutional standards. According to the elders, the move appears to be driven by personal interests rather than good governance.
The Forum reminded lawmakers that Governor Fubara’s mandate came from the people of Rivers State and can only be challenged by following strict constitutional rules and due process.
They warned that the impeachment process could increase political tension, damage public trust in democracy, and further destabilize the state, which is still recovering from the effects of the earlier emergency rule.
“Our people are still suffering from the impact of that period. This move risks reopening old wounds and raising tension when peace and stability are badly needed,” the statement said.
The Rivers Elders called on the House of Assembly to immediately withdraw the impeachment notice and put the peace and progress of Rivers State first.
They also reaffirmed their commitment to peace, unity, justice, and democracy, warning that they will not stay silent against actions that threaten the future of the state.
