Uganda’s President, Yoweri Museveni, has been declared the winner of the 2026 presidential election, extending his long stay in power.
The 81-year-old leader, who has ruled Uganda since 1986, won the election with over 7.9 million votes, the highest among all candidates.
The announcement was made by the Electoral Commission Chairman, Simon Byabakama, who confirmed that Museveni scored more than 50% of the total votes, meeting the legal requirement to win.
About 11.4 million Ugandans voted in the election, with a voter turnout of 52.5%. The polls were held amid reports of an internet shutdown and limits placed on some civil society groups.
Museveni’s victory means he will continue his leadership, marking over 40 years in power.
