Kunle Kuti, the son of the late Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, has revealed that his father turned down a multimillion-dollar record contract in the 1990s to safeguard the integrity of African music.
Speaking on a recent episode of TheCable’s ‘Our Two Kobo’ podcast, Kunle explained that Fela’s refusal was a principled stand against Western commercial influence.
He stated that his father believed his music was a tool for African expression and should not be shaped by foreign interests.
“I have seen Fela turn down a million dollars from a record company. He told them my music is for Africa. Europe and America are developed,” he said.
