A civic monitoring organisation, MonITNG, has raised a damning alarm over the shocking state of the Umunneato Ishi-Ogwa Primary Health Centre in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State, describing the facility as unsafe, abandoned and unfit for human use.
In a statement posted on its verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday, MonITNG revealed that a health centre meant to serve over 2,000 residents has deteriorated into a crumbling relic, with cracked walls, broken windows, leaking roofs and damp, debris-littered floors.
The group said the situation is made even more horrifying by the complete takeover of the premises by weeds, turning the centre into a breeding ground for snakes and other reptiles now roaming freely within and around the facility.
According to MonITNG, rooms originally designated for patient care have been left overgrown, exposed to harsh weather and stripped of all dignity. The centre reportedly has no electricity, no medical equipment, no functional wards and no healthcare personnel on ground.
The disturbing discovery was made by the Tracka team during its nationwide monitoring of Primary Healthcare Centres under the Federal Government’s ongoing Primary Healthcare revitalisation programme.
“The story from Imo State remains deeply disturbing,” the group said, lamenting that despite billions of naira allocated annually to the health sector, primary healthcare facilities across the state have been abandoned to decay.
MonITNG called on Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) and the Federal Ministry of Health to urgently intervene.
“Leadership must prioritise people over politics,” the group warned, urging authorities to immediately clear the premises, reconstruct the facility, equip it adequately and deploy qualified medical personnel.
The organisation stressed that primary healthcare is the first line of defence for citizens, warning that abandoning such facilities places entire communities at risk and condemns vulnerable residents to needless suffering.
