Renowned human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has spoken out following the release of the identities of military officers accused of plotting to remove President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from office.
Falana’s remarks were reported by TheCable in a post shared on its official X account on Tuesday, January 27, 2026. His comments followed an announcement by the Defence Headquarters confirming disciplinary action against several officers.
Earlier, the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, disclosed that 16 soldiers had been identified in connection with the alleged plot. He stated that the affected personnel would be subjected to court-martial proceedings in accordance with military laws and existing regulations.
Among the officers named were Brigadier General Musa Abubakar Sadiq, Colonel M. A. Ma’aji, Lieutenant Colonel S. Bappah, Lieutenant Colonel A. A. Hayatu, Lieutenant Colonel Dangnan, Lieutenant Colonel M. Almakura, Major A. J. Ibrahim, along with others.
Reacting to the development, Falana noted that the Nigerian Army had effectively acknowledged the existence of a coup attempt after previously dismissing such claims months earlier. He argued that the shift in position warranted an apology to the Nigerian public.
According to Falana, public officials must learn to treat citizens with respect and honesty. He pointed out that having initially denied the existence of any coup plot, the military owed Nigerians an explanation once investigations revealed that the issue went beyond mere indiscipline within the ranks.
