Dr Peter Odili Cancer and Cardiovascular Centre Opens for Public Use After Three Years

The Dr. Peter Odili Cancer and Cardiovascular Disease Diagnostic and Treatment Centre has officially opened for public use after remaining unused for over three years.

The facility, originally built by the immediate past administration under the leadership of former Rivers State Governor, H.E. Barr. Nyesom Wike, was commissioned in November 2022 but had yet to become operational until now.

The development was disclosed during a scheduled inspection visit by the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Chidinma Oreh, who confirmed that the centre is now fully ready to deliver services to the public.

Located along Ikwerre Road in Rumuokwuta, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, the state-of-the-art medical facility is expected to serve as a major hub for advanced healthcare delivery and medical tourism in Rivers State and the wider Niger Delta region.

The centre is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, cardiovascular and renal diseases. It offers a wide range of specialised services including chemotherapy, nuclear medicine, advanced diagnostics and critical care.

With a total capacity of 72 bed spaces, the facility includes a 10-bed Intensive Care Unit and Coronary Care Unit (ICU/CCU), modern operating theatres, a cardiac catheterisation laboratory (Cath Lab), chemotherapy suites, as well as fully equipped pathology and radiology units, ensuring comprehensive care for patients with chronic and life-threatening conditions.

Designed with future expansion in mind, the centre is also equipped with a helipad to allow for rapid emergency access and patient evacuation when necessary.

Health officials say the activation of the facility marks a significant milestone in strengthening Rivers State’s healthcare infrastructure and improving access to specialised medical care for residents.
