A Federal High Court in Ikoyi has ordered Airtel Nigeria to pay ₦210 million in dãmages for illẹgally using veteran singer Veno Marioghae Mbanefo’s iconic song, “Nigeria Go Survive,” without her permission.
Justice Ibrahim Kala ruled that Airtel infringed on the artiste’s copyright by using the song to promote its products, including its TV app and The Voice Nigeria.
The singer filed the lawsuit in September 2022 after discovering her song was being used in Airtel’s marketing campaigns. According to her, the telecom giant denied the claim, allegedly defamed her, and even threatened criminal charges, forcing her to seek legal action.
