Couple arrested for Faking their own Kidnap to extort N10M

A Lagos couple, Fred and Goodness, have been arrested for allegedly staging their own kidnapping and collecting ₦10 million from relatives and friends under false pretenses.

According to police sources, the couple hatched the plan on January 7 after the husband reportedly needed money to return to the United States, but lacked financial support from friends and family. To raise the cash, they pretended to have been abducted and demanded ransom.

The families, believing the couple’s lives were at risk, quickly gathered ₦10 million within three days. The couple arranged for the ransom to be dropped at a school in Cappa, Mushin, but police monitoring the location became suspicious.

“The woman arrived first, and the man came separately. Both later emerged together carrying a bag,” a police source said. A search of the bag revealed the ransom money, leading to the couple’s immediate arrest.

During questioning, the wife reportedly admitted she encouraged the plan, confirming the kidnapping was entirely fabricated.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Addebisi, confirmed the arrest, adding that investigations are ongoing and the couple will face court charges upon conclusion.

This case is among several recent incidents highlighting a growing trend of self-orchestrated abductions in the state, raising concerns about the lengths some people will go to secure money.
