In what residents are calling “the most progress we’ve seen in years,” a local community has officially given up on waiting for potholes to be fixed and instead decided to plant trees in them.
The innovative project, spotted on a quiet suburban street, features several young trees growing directly out of potholes that have reached what experts describe as “permanent landmark” status. According to locals, the potholes have been there so long they were starting to qualify for heritage protection anyway.
“We realised the potholes weren’t going anywhere,” said one resident while pointing at a small tree rooted firmly in the middle of the road. “So we thought, why fight nature? Let’s collaborate with it.”
The initiative has been praised as environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and emotionally healing. Drivers are now forced to slow down, not because of speed bumps, but out of fear of hitting a tree that came free with the road.
Municipal officials have welcomed the move, releasing a brief statement saying, “This aligns perfectly with our long-term strategy of not fixing anything and calling it sustainable.”
Urban planners are reportedly studying the site as a pilot project, with future plans including:
Shrubs for minor cracks
Bonsai trees for small potholes
Full-grown oaks for roads that have been “scheduled for repair since 2012”
Children in the area have already named the trees, while motorists have started using them as navigation points. “Turn left at the third pothole tree, then avoid the one that looks like it might sue you for damages,” said one taxi driver.
At press time, residents were optimistic. “In five years,” one community member said proudly, “this won’t be a road anymore — it’ll be a forest with a speed limit.”
