Sultan of Sokoto: “Christians Should Never Be Subjected to Sharia Law”

— Strong Call for Peace, Mutual Respect & Religious Freedom in Nigeria

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, has reaffirmed a crucial principle for national unity — Sharia law applies only to Muslims, and no Christian should ever be subjected to it under any circumstances.

Speaking at the 2025 triennial meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) in Abuja, the Sultan stressed that it is completely wrong for Christians to be dragged before Sharia courts, adding that Nigerians of all faiths must be allowed to practice their religions freely.

He reiterated that:
✨ Nigeria is a multi-religious nation
✨ Government must remain neutral and fair to all faiths
✨ No Christian should be forced to dress, pray, or act like a Muslim

National Leaders Echo the Call for Peace

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, urged stronger cooperation between NIREC and the Federal Government to strengthen peace-building efforts and curb insecurity. He warned that extremists were manipulating religion to divide the country and insisted that Nigerians must reject stereotypes and hate narratives.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, acknowledged challenges such as insecurity and political tension but assured Nigerians of the government’s unwavering commitment to safety, welfare, and national cohesion.

CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, emphasized that faith institutions and government must work hand-in-hand to mobilize communities and sustain peace across the nation.

NIREC Executive Secretary, Rev. Fr. Cornelius Omonokhua, reminded leaders that every life is precious to God and called for unity in the fight against t£rrorism and banditry.

Bottom Line

Nigeria thrives when peace, tolerance, and mutual respect guide our actions.
The Sultan’s message is a timely reminder that religious freedom is a constitutional right, and protecting it is essential for national unity.
