Kwara Poly confirms killing of former student in suspected cult clash

The management of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, has confirmed the death of a former student, Oyelade Habeeb Olawale, who was reportedly killed in a suspected clash between rival cult groups near the institution on Tuesday.

Just Event Online TV reports, Olawale, a former Civil Engineering student with matriculation number ND/20/CEC/FT/206, was said to have been attacked during a confrontation involving ex-students allegedly linked to various cult groups who had returned to the campus vicinity.

The violent incident triggered panic among students and staff, prompting the institution’s security unit to intervene and restore normalcy.

Sources within the institution disclosed that several suspects believed to be involved in the attack were apprehended by the school’s security personnel and subsequently handed over to law enforcement agencies for further investigation.

Confirming the development, the Polytechnic’s Public Relations Officer, Halimat Garba, described the incident as deeply unfortunate and contrary to the institution’s commitment to a peaceful academic environment.

“We deeply regret the loss of life and extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased,” she stated.

Garba noted that the security unit acted swiftly through internal intelligence gathering, leading to the arrest of the suspects now in police custody. She added that management is working closely with security agencies to ensure justice is served and to prevent any recurrence.
