Rail Lines Going Electric: Vandals Risk Severe Injury, Death – NRC MD Opeifa Warns

The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa, has issued a stern warning to vandals and trespassers as Nigeria transitions to electric rail lines. He said the new system is designed to modernise the nation’s rail operations but comes with serious dangers for anyone attempting to tamper with the infrastructure.

Speaking on November 30, 2025, during an interview on The Exchange Podcast in Nigeria, Opeifa stressed that the electrified tracks are highly sensitive and pose life-threatening risks. He noted that anyone attempting to cut or interfere with the lines could suffer severe injury or death from electrocution, adding that the NRC has intensified surveillance and security measures to safeguard the system.

Opeifa appealed to residents living near rail corridors to avoid restricted areas and report suspicious activity, describing the upgraded rail network as a national asset that must be protected. He added that the electrification project forms part of broader reforms aimed at improving passenger experience, boosting freight operations, and attracting more private sector participation.
