ASUU President Criticizes Federal Government’s Approach to Education

The President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Prof. Chris Piwuna, has accused the Federal Government of not prioritising education, saying officials often do not treat the sector’s challenges as national issues requiring collective responsibility.

Speaking during The Toyin Falola Interviews on Sunday in a virtual session titled “A Conversation with the ASUU President”, Piwuna stressed that the indifference of key government officials has hindered sustainable reforms in Nigerian universities.

“Members of the Federal Executive Council often see education challenges as the responsibility of only the Minister of Education,” he noted, highlighting a lack of shared accountability at the highest levels of government.

ASUU, which has historically relied on strikes to press for its demands, continues to push for better funding, improved welfare for lecturers, and systemic reforms to strengthen the nation’s education sector.
