The Igbo World Assembly (IWA), an umbrella body of Igbo women, has called on all “true Nigerians,” regardless of ethnic, religious, or political affiliations, to support the planned nationwide protest by activist Omoyele Sowore, demanding the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been in detention since 2021 following his rendition from Kenya to Nigeria, despite reportedly holding British citizenship. The protest is scheduled to take place across the country on October 20, 2025.
In a statement issued over the weekend, the IWA, led by Lolo Nneka Chimezie, described the planned protest as “a step in the right direction,” noting that Kanu’s continued detention represents “an injustice to all.” The group urged Nigerians to unite against oppression, intimidation, and the disregard for court orders, emphasizing the need to uphold freedom of speech and the rule of law.
The statement read in part:
“Ordinary Nigerians must unite and resist the continued violation of court orders. We must not allow politicians to exploit our differences in party, religion, or ethnicity to divide us, while they themselves remain united in self-interest.
“Nigerians must stand with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, whose warnings about the state of the nation have become evident. It is for speaking truth to power that the system is fighting him.”
