The 2023 Labour Party Vice Presidential candidate, Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has questioned the prevailing political narrative that a grand coalition is the only way for the opposition to defeat President Bola Tinubu in 2027. According to Baba-Ahmed, while coming together is good, the idea that it is an absolute requirement is a false premise, proven by the 2023 election results.
Speaking in a recent interview on Trust TV, he began by acknowledging the formation of the new alliance. “Once again, here we go. Forces that are not happy with the serving government are coming together like they once did and they made history. That is where we are”.
He then directly challenged the popular narrative about the necessity of a coalition. “The narrative is that you must come together, that everybody must come together to defeat Tinubu. By which law? Which principle says that? It's not true”.
He used the 2023 election as evidence that a sitting government can be challenged without a unified front. “Just in 2023, in the presence of APC when they even had a sitting government, PDP and Labour Party defeated both without a coalition. So that narrative that you all have to come together in order to defeat Tinubu is not true”.
Despite his critique, he affirmed his support for the principle of unity, provided it is for the right reasons. “I'm in support of coming together. As a Muslim, I'm telling you that coming together is encouraged. It's Islamic... People must come together for a common, honorable cause. That cause must be honorable”.
