At 75, Mohamed Lamin Turay Passes WASSCE with 5 Credits

At age 69, Mohamed Lamin Turay made Sierra Leonean history when he walked into Rose of Shalom Primary School in Makeni to sit the 2019/2020 National Primary School Examination (NPSE)—becoming the country's oldest recorded candidate. But his educational journey was just beginning.

By 2023, Mohamed Lamin Turay had successfully passed the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). Now, at 75, he has sat the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and achieved passes in five subjects.

Like many other candidates who struggled with the English Language paper this year, Mohamed Lamin scored an F9 in the subject.

Speaking with Probe Media-SL during his exams, Mohamed Lamin revealed that his ambition extends far beyond acquiring certificates: he still holds a lifelong dream of becoming the Speaker of Sierra Leone’s Parliament.
