Senator Ted Cruz confirmed Friday that his Houston office received a suspicious piece of mail containing a white powder substance. Law enforcement moved fast. The FBI, Houston Police and Fire Department, and U.S. Capitol Police all responded on the scene.
Staff members were reported safe. Cruz thanked the professionals who handled the response and his own team. "I am grateful to law enforcement for their professionalism and to my dedicated team members, who work tirelessly on behalf of Texans," he wrote.
Cruz did not mince words about the larger meaning of the delivery. "This incident is deeply concerning. Attempts to intimidate your political opponents have no place in our country."
The mailing arrived amid a wider series of suspicious packages sent to congressional offices, Secretary of State offices, and election-related addresses across the country. Federal investigators are treating the letters as a coordinated set of incidents.
