UK Exempts Citizens of 19 Countries From English Test for Student Visa Applications

LONDON, UK – The United Kingdom has listed 19 countries and territories whose citizens are exempt from proving their English-language proficiency when applying for a UK Student visa.

According to the UK government’s published immigration guidance, nationals of the listed countries do not have to provide separate evidence of their English knowledge. The exemption can also apply to applicants who have completed a qualification equivalent to a UK degree in one of the listed countries.
Countries on the UK exemption list
The 19 countries and territories are:
Antigua and Barbuda
Australia
The Bahamas
Barbados
Belize
British Overseas Territories
Dominica
Grenada
Guyana
Ireland
Jamaica
Malta
New Zealand
St Kitts and Nevis
St Lucia
St Vincent and the Grenadines
Trinidad and Tobago
United Kingdom
United States

What it means for African students
No African country appears on the exemption list. As a result, students from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa and other African countries may still be required to demonstrate their English-language ability when applying for a UK Student visa, subject to the other exemptions and routes provided under UK immigration rules.

The UK government states that applicants do not need to prove their English knowledge if they are from one of the specified countries or have completed a qualifying degree-equivalent qualification in one of them.
The requirement remains an important consideration for African students planning to study in the UK, despite English being an official language in several African countries.
