Stephen A. Smith went to the White House as Bill Maher’s guest for a dinner with President Trump and Kid Rock. Maher did most of the talking. Smith made clear he was never invited directly by Trump.
Smith described the exchange on the economy. Trump treated current conditions as temporary. “In Trump’s world, it’s just a bump in the road right now. Everything’s going to be fine.”
On inflation and the $40 trillion debt, Trump was blunt: “Hey, that’s going to get resolved.” He repeated, “Don’t worry, don’t worry, don’t worry, don’t worry. There’s trillions, trillions coming into us, into our country. Just mark my words. Believe me, believe me. It’s going to be great. It’s going to be wonderful. Mark my words.”
Smith pushed back: “Trillions? What are you talking about? Where’s the proof?” Trump answered, “You’ll see it. It’s coming.”
The conversation turned to Canada. Trump said they are “robbing us” and that the relationship “costs us about 95 billion dollars every year.” He insisted, “It’s got to be fair.” He added that previous presidents failed to fix it and that he would. He told the room, “You do understand I’m the greatest president in American history, right? I’m the greatest president that ever lived.”
Smith’s account shows Trump unconcerned by short-term noise and focused on incoming investment, fairer trade, and results that have not fully arrived yet. The president’s message was consistent: the numbers will improve, the money is coming, and the deals will be better.
