Eyewitnesses have identified a man known as Adenijo Sola, alias “Solar,” as the alleged leader of the group of thugs who attacked African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, and members of his team in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

The eyewitnesses also alleged that Solar was on the payroll of the Ekiti State Government.

“Adenijo Sola, who is also known as ‘Solar’ led the attack against Sowore. He once murdered a policewoman in Omuo,” one of the eyewitnesses alleged. Follow Politics

“He is on state government payroll,” another eyewitnesses privy to happenings in the state told SaharaReporters.

Checks by SaharaReporters show that Adenijo Sola was among seven men who stood trial over the September 2014 murder of Chief Omolafe Aderiye, a former chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Ekiti State.

Aderiye, a loyalist of former Governor Ayodele Fayose, was murdered on September 25, 2014.

The murder trial attracted considerable attention in the state. In May 2017, drama unfolded at the Ado-Ekiti High Court when the defendants, including Adenijo, rejected a lawyer who announced an appearance for them.

According to reports published at the time, Adenijo and the other defendants questioned the lawyer's appearance, insisting that they did not know him and had not authorised him to represent them.

Adenijo reportedly told the court in Yoruba, “Iwo o kii n se loya wa o,” meaning, “You are not our lawyer.”

However, in January 2018, the Ekiti State High Court, presided over by Justice Adekanye Lekan Ogunmoye, acquitted and discharged Adenijo and his six co-defendants.

The court ruled that the prosecution had failed to provide sufficient evidence linking them to Aderiye's murder. The defendants had denied the allegations.

The eyewitnesses' identification of Solar comes amid allegations by Sowore that political thugs linked to the Ekiti State Government House attacked him and his associates on Friday, October 30, 2026, shortly after he concluded an interview at MIDAS FM 90.5 in Ado-Ekiti.Follow Politics

Sowore has also accused operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) of providing the attackers with tracking and operational support.

In a series of posts following the incident, he alleged that the attackers came from the Government House and that DSS operatives had been monitoring his movements since his arrival in the state.

In one of the posts, Sowore wrote, “This is the level of infamy to which Nigeria has been subjected! Those who brutally attacked us in Ado-Ekiti today came from the Government House @ekitistategov. They are well known, and they were provided with tracking and operational support by the DSS.”Follow Politics

He alleged that the harassment began shortly after he and his associates arrived in Ekiti State on Thursday, claiming that DSS operatives had been monitoring their movements and intimidating people who provided them with services.

“Since our arrival yesterday, DSS operatives have been trailing and harassing us. They even threatened the manager of the first place where we ate, warning him never to allow us to use his premises again,” he said.

Describing Friday's incident, he added, “Today, shortly after I completed an interview at MIDAS FM 90.5 in Ado-Ekiti, the thugs descended on us in a violent attack, allegedly with the assistance of the DSS.”

The activist also accused the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, CP Falade Adegoroye Michael, of downplaying the attack by describing it as an “altercation” and the victims' injuries as “minor”.

According to the activist, the commissioner personally visited the location where he and other victims were receiving emergency medical attention and saw their injuries before the police issued a statement describing the incident as an “altercation”.

Rejecting that description, Sowore insisted that he and his associates were attacked rather than involved in a confrontation.Follow
