ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria’s telecommunications market is set to welcome another operator after Swift Telephone Network Limited (STN) secured a Unified Access Service Licence (UASL) from the Federal Government.
The licence gives STN the regulatory pathway to provide telecommunications services nationwide, potentially increasing competition among existing operators including MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Globacom, 9mobile and Lebara.
STN, an indigenous telecom company founded in 1998, said it plans to announce its strategic partnerships and national rollout plans in the coming weeks.
The company’s Managing Director and CEO, Oluwole Adetuyi, said STN will focus on developing Nigerian engineering and digital talent, partnering with local vendors and expanding connectivity to help bridge the country’s digital divide.
STN’s Director of Legal and Regulatory Affairs, Yetunde Okafor, said the company wants to build a Nigerian-rooted telecommunications business with a global outlook.
The company previously suspended operations in 2010 before Adetuyi and Okafor began rebuilding it in 2017. STN reinstated its licence in 2019 and resumed operations later that year.
With the new UASL approval, STN now has a pathway to expand nationwide, potentially giving Nigerian consumers another option for voice, SMS and data services.
