Brighton secured a 1-0 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, with Yasin Ayari’s first-half strike handing the visitors all three points in their Premier League encounter.
Ayari scored the decisive goal in the 11th minute, finishing from inside the box after being set up by Maxim De Cuyper following a set-piece situation.
The result gave Brighton a league victory over City just three days after they were eliminated by the same opponents in the Carabao Cup, losing 4-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw.
City dominated possession and created more opportunities, recording 62 per cent of the ball and 21 shots compared with Brighton’s seven. However, they failed to find a way past the visitors’ defence as Brighton held on to their early advantage.
Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen was named Player of the Match for his performance as Fabian Hürzeler’s side secured an important away win.
The defeat will be a setback for City, who entered the fixture at the top of the Premier League table, while Brighton arrived in third place.
City’s second consecutive loss
The defeat marked Manchester City’s second consecutive loss in the Premier League, following their 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa at Villa Park on October 24.
Glonat Newsonline reports that Nicolas Jackson scored twice to hand Villa victory, opening the scoring in the sixth minute before Erling Haaland equalised for City seven minutes into the second half.
Jackson then restored Villa’s lead in the 60th minute to end City’s seven-match winning start to the league campaign.
Saturday’s defeat to Brighton means City have now suffered two league losses this season, both in consecutive matches.
City will look forward to the Wednesday Champions League away fixture at RB Leipzig in Germany.
Brighton sterling performance
Brighton’s victory over City adds to an impressive campaign for Fabian Hürzeler’s side, who had recorded five wins, one draw and two defeats in their opening eight league matches.
Their victories included a 3-0 thrashing of Arsenal on Matchday Five, when goals from Pascal Groß, Charalampos Kostoulas and Chema Andrés handed the Gunners their first league defeat of the season.
The Seagulls’ only previous league defeats came against Chelsea, who edged them 4-3 on August 30, and Liverpool, who won 2-0 on October 25. They also drew 1-1 with Leeds United on September 5.
