37 Illegal Miners Die in Custody, But Mining Resumes Across Niger

MINNA, Nigeria – Illegal mining has reportedly resumed in several parts of Niger State despite a government suspension ordered after 37 alleged illegal miners died in NSCDC custody on September 17.

The detainees were arrested during operations in the M.I. Wushishi and Lukoto areas on September 15 and 16. The circumstances surrounding their deaths remain under investigation, with the Federal Government setting up an independent committee.

DAILY POST reported that miners had returned to some affected communities, with residents complaining of damaged fences, open excavations and threats to their properties. Some miners reportedly said they had no alternative means of livelihood.

Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago had ordered the suspension of all mining activities across the state on September 18, while calling for stronger federal intervention.

Police said arrests and patrols were continuing, but residents say repeated enforcement operations have failed to permanently stop the activities.
