Nollywood actress, Sharon Ooja, has shared the emotional and mental challenges she endured while playing a character with bipolar disorder.
In an interview on Arise TV, Ooja said the role helped her better understand what people with mental health conditions go through.
She described the experience as mentally exhausting and said it took a lot of effort to switch between intense emotions for the role.
“I think that because it was more mentally draining for me; when you’re a normal person playing a bipolar role, it’s a lot of work,” she said.
“This gave me so much empathy for people actually dealing with mental health issues because it was draining,” she said.
The actress shared that the experience gave her a better understanding of what people with mental health conditions face.
Ooja also talked about how her director often had to correct her during filming because she would slip back into a normal emotional state without realising it.
“My director would sometimes have to call me because he’s like, you’re not staying on tempo, you’re going back to normal, you can’t be normal.”
The 35-year-old actress explained that constantly switching between emotions was particularly difficult, as she had to portray crying, anger, and laughter within the same performance.
“So, it was so draining having to be crying, laughing, angry so many emotions in one.
