Pausing AI Is How You Hand the Future to Beijing

A CNBC clip of Palantir CEO Alex Karp is circulating again for a reason. While some of the same Silicon Valley voices who built this technology now want to tap the brakes, Karp is saying what grown-ups in national security have known for years: a pause in the West is not a pause. It is a transfer of power.

The clip, resurfaced September 12, 2026 as Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, and Elon Musk floated ideas to slow capability advances, shows Karp treating the pause crowd as people who have not looked at a map.

From the interview:

“If we didn’t have adversaries, I would be very in favor of pausing this technology completely, but we do.”

And:

“You can’t pause it because it’s a structural advantage both for LLMs and algorithms.”

That is the whole argument. In a vacuum, caution looks responsible. In a world with China, Russia, and every other regime that will not sign a gentleman’s agreement, unilateral restraint is surrender with extra paperwork.

Karp’s point is not that AI is risk-free. He has said he would halt the whole project if the United States were alone on the field. The field is not empty. Adversaries treat large language models and the algorithms around them as a structural edge in intelligence, industry, and war. They will keep training, keep deploying, and keep integrating the technology into the state. A Western pause does not freeze the technology. It freezes only the side that still debates it on television.

The people calling for a slowdown often talk as if safety is a seminar topic. Karp talks as if it is a contest. One side wins the stack. The other lives under the winner’s rules. That is not a vibe. That is how great-power competition works.

America can regulate, harden, own its data, and keep the application layer in sovereign hands. What it cannot do is pretend that stopping first is moral leadership. It is a concession. Karp put it plainly: the people arguing for a pause are not living in reality, and they are, in practice, saying we should let our enemies win.
