An adviser to Iran’s supreme leader just raised the ransom on the world’s oil artery.
Mohammad Bagher Zolqadr said Iranian forces will not reopen the Strait of Hormuz until Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu are removed from power. He called it the first stage of the Iranian people’s revenge.
That is not diplomacy. It is a regime that lost its old leader, took a beating, and is now trying to turn a shipping chokepoint into a political veto over two elected governments.
In August the talk was waiting out Trump’s term until January 2029. Now it is explicit: the waterway stays shut until the men who hit Iran are out of office. One-fifth of global oil used to move through that strait. The closure has already jammed markets and raised costs. Tehran wants the pain to do what its missiles could not.
The demand also exposes the split. Trump has to worry about energy prices and the American economy. Netanyahu has to worry about a regime that still talks nuclear weapons, missiles, and revenge. Iran is betting it can drive a wedge by making the price of peace look like political suicide for both men.
Zolqadr framed 200 days of street presence as proof Iran cannot be broken in three days. The other reading is simpler. A government that needs to close a global trade route and demand the fall of foreign leaders is not projecting strength. It is cashing its last serious chip.
The strait is leverage. It is not a substitute for winning a war. The United States and Israel already showed they can strike inside Iran. Markets and navies have already started working around the bottleneck. The mullahs can keep the waterway closed and keep talking about thrones and revenge. That does not put them back in charge of the calendar.
