ABUJA, Nigeria – Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of turning the Dangote Refinery’s business model into a political campaign strategy.
Atiku, through his spokesperson, Phrank Shaibu, said the refinery was right to object to being forced to sell fuel below cost, but argued that his proposed subsidy plan would be different from the former import-based subsidy system.
According to Atiku, his proposal would support domestic fuel production rather than subsidise imported petrol.
He explained that the government would provide support to Nigerian refineries to reduce production costs, allowing consumers to buy fuel at lower prices while encouraging local investment and job creation.
“The subsidy follows the barrel refined in Nigeria,” Atiku said, stressing that the proposal was intended to support Nigerian production rather than importers or middlemen.
The former vice president also criticised the Presidency for allegedly portraying his proposal as an attempt to return to the previous import subsidy system.
President Tinubu and Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi have opposed Atiku’s proposal to restore fuel subsidies.
