The Lagos State Ministry of Tertiary Education has commended the Executive Chairman of Olorunda Local Council Development Area, Hon. Ajose Peter Kumayon, for his vigilance and prompt intervention following information concerning an alleged unapproved university operating within the council area.
The commendation came on Friday, September 11, 2026, when a delegation from the Ministry, led by the Director of the Department of Inspection and Monitoring, Dr. Mrs. Omoloye Yemisi, visited the chairman at his office in Iworo.
The visit provided an opportunity for the Ministry and the council to discuss regulatory compliance in tertiary and post secondary education as well as the need for stronger collaboration between government authorities and regulatory agencies.
Speaking during the meeting, Dr. Omoloye explained that the Department of Inspection and Monitoring is responsible for monitoring tertiary and post secondary institutions across Lagos State to ensure compliance with applicable approvals, licences and regulatory requirements.
She said preliminary inspection activities had raised concerns about some institutions that allegedly did not have the necessary approval, licence or accreditation from the appropriate regulatory authorities, including the National Universities Commission, NUC, and the Lagos State Ministry of Tertiary Education.
The Ministry also briefed the council on its inspection activities involving Global Heritage Health Technology and St. Michael Skills Acquisition College in the Badagry area.
The delegation commended Ajose for his vigilance, prompt response and cooperation with security agencies after information concerning the alleged unapproved university came to the attention of the council.
The commendation, according to the delegation, underscored the importance of local authorities promptly reporting and responding to activities that may require regulatory or security intervention.
Responding, Ajose thanked the Ministry for the visit and reaffirmed his administration's commitment to education, human capital development, public safety and the protection of residents.
The chairman explained that his administration had intervened after receiving information concerning the institution and subsequently referred the matter and affected persons to the relevant authorities for further investigation and appropriate action.
According to Ajose, 107 students were identified in connection with the institution under investigation.
He stressed that the council's intervention was aimed at protecting residents and ensuring that matters requiring the attention of regulatory and security agencies were properly referred to them.
Ajose also disclosed that the council had intervened in a separate case involving a suspected baby factory operation within the LCDA, with 37 persons subsequently handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP, Badagry, for appropriate intervention.
The chairman commended the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, and other security personnel for their cooperation and professionalism during the interventions, particularly the NSCDC Divisional Officer, Mr. Ekunola.
He stressed the importance of timely communication and information sharing among local government authorities, state and federal agencies, regulatory bodies and security organisations.
According to him, effective coordination would help authorities respond more quickly to issues affecting residents, particularly in areas involving education, public safety and the protection of vulnerable persons.
Ajose expressed his administration's readiness to strengthen its collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Tertiary Education on educational standards, regulatory compliance, student protection and public safety.
The Ministry, in turn, expressed appreciation to Olorunda LCDA for its cooperation and assured the council of continued partnership in efforts aimed at protecting educational standards and members of the public.
The meeting ended with both parties reaffirming their commitment to stronger intergovernmental collaboration, timely information sharing and prompt intervention in matters affecting educational standards, public safety and the wellbeing of residents.
The development places further emphasis on the role of local councils in identifying concerns within their communities and ensuring that matters requiring specialist investigation are promptly brought before the appropriate regulatory and security authorities.
While the status and regulatory position of the institution remain subject to the relevant authorities' investigation and determination, the Ministry's commendation highlights the importance of Ajose's intervention in bringing the matter to official attention.
