Melaye: In Ibadan, I Saw a 6-Storey Building, When I Looked Around I Counted 40 Churches Inside It

Former Senator Dino Melaye has shared his thoughts on Nigeria's economic challenges, arguing that the country's development priorities require serious reflection and structural adjustment.

Speaking during an interview featured by KaaTruths on Thursday, 13 August, 2026, Melaye linked economic growth to the balance between productive industries and other societal institutions.

He maintained that sustainable national development depends largely on industrial expansion, job creation and productive economic activities rather than consumption alone.

According to Melaye, he recently observed a striking scene during a visit to Ibadan that reinforced his concerns about Nigeria's economic direction.

He said he came across a six-storey building and decided to take a closer look at what occupied the structure.

After examining the building, Melaye claimed he counted about forty different churches operating within the same premises.

The former Kogi West senator said the experience prompted him to reflect on the country's economic priorities and productive capacity.

He argued that an economy cannot thrive where industrial development fails to keep pace with the growth of non-productive institutions.

Melaye suggested that expanding manufacturing and industrial activities should receive greater national attention to stimulate employment and economic growth.

According to him, countries seeking stronger economies must create environments where industries flourish alongside other sectors of society.

In his words, he said, “In Ibadan, I Saw a 6-Storey Building, When I Looked Around I Counted 40 Churches Inside It. You cannot have a good economy in a country where you have more churches than industries.”

His remarks have generated discussion on the relationship between economic productivity, industrialisation and national development, while highlighting differing opinions about the factors influencing Nigeria's economic performance and future growth prospects.
