FUTA Gets Prominent Mention in Greenmetric Ranking

The Federal University of Technology Akure FUTA's strong performance in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings is not based on a single project. Rather, it reflects sustained efforts across the areas that UI GreenMetric evaluates. These include campus infrastructure, environmental management, teaching, research, and governance. Some of the factors that have contributed to FUTA's ranking include:

1. Strong environmental and sustainability research.
* As a technology-focused university, FUTA has active research in renewable energy, climate change, forestry, agriculture, environmental management, and sustainable engineering.
* Faculty and postgraduate students regularly publish sustainability-related research and develop practical solutions to environmental challenges.

2.Sustainability-focused academic programmes

- FUTA offers programmes in fields such as Forestry and Wood Technology, Environmental Management, Agricultural Technology, Ecotourism, and Civil and Environmental Engineering.

- Sustainability concepts are integrated into teaching and student projects.

3. Green campus and biodiversity.
- The university's large, green campus includes significant tree cover and natural vegetation, helping conserve biodiversity and reduce its environmental footprint.

- Preservation of green spaces contributes positively to the "Setting and Infrastructure" criterion.
4. Waste management and environmental sanitation.
- The university has implemented waste collection and environmental sanitation programmes including establishment of Circular Economy Hub.
- Efforts to reduce pollution and maintain a clean campus support its sustainability performance.

5. Energy and climate initiatives
- Energy conservation measures, efficient lighting, and other climate-conscious practices contribute to the Energy and Climate Change category.

- Like many universities, FUTA continues to improve in renewable energy adoption.

6. Student participation

- *Environmental clubs, community tree-planting campaigns, clean-up exercises, and sustainability awareness programmes demonstrate student engagement, which is valued in the rankings*.

7. Community outreach

- FUTA extends sustainability beyond campus through extension services, environmental education, agricultural outreach, and partnerships with government and local communities.

8. Institutional commitment

* UI GreenMetric also considers whether sustainability is embedded in university policies, budgeting, reporting, and long-term planning—not just individual projects. Universities that systematically document these efforts tend to perform better.
