A former Peoples Democratic Party House of Representatives candidate for Dekina/Bassa Federal Constituency, Usman Austin Okai, has advised Nigerians to exercise greater caution before undergoing major surgical procedures following concerns over alleged cases of organ theft within the country's healthcare system.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, August 22, 2026, Okai urged patients preparing for surgery to consider undergoing medical scans beforehand to establish the condition and presence of their vital organs. He also advised them to carry out further scans after their operations to confirm that their organs remained intact.
"Before you undergo any major surgery now, please make sure to get a scan to confirm that your vital organs are intact. After the surgery, get another scan to verify that everything is still there. A lot is going on in this country," he wrote.
Okai further warned that people who could not afford such medical examinations should think carefully before proceeding with an operation. He based his concerns on allegations that some unscrupulous individuals in the medical profession could be involved in the illegal removal and trafficking of human organs.
"Please, if you cannot perform this test, do not proceed with any operation, as some bad eggs among medical doctors are allegedly accused of stealing people's organs," he added.
His comments came after claims by social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, regarding a young man who allegedly discovered that he had lost a kidney without his knowledge or permission.
According to the activist, the young man visited his office at about August 18, 2026, to report his experience after receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Abuja. The man allegedly underwent another medical scan at a later time and discovered that one of his kidneys was missing.
VeryDarkMan reportedly expressed serious concern over the allegation, describing the matter as one of the most disturbing cases he had encountered.
However, the specific claims surrounding the young man's alleged missing kidney have not been independently verified. Relevant health authorities had also not issued a detailed public statement on the matter at the time of the report.
