According to a report by Daily Post on Sunday, August 9, 2026, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal has accused the African Democratic Congress of improperly replacing its governorship candidate in Adamawa State.
Lawal made the allegation in a Facebook post titled “Kachalla Series Three,” where he also criticised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar's presidential candidacy under the ADC.
The former SGF claimed that Engr. Umar Suleiman emerged victorious in the party's governorship primary but was later replaced by Tukur Moddibo.
He alleged that ethnic and religious considerations influenced the decision and accused Atiku of exerting pressure on the party leadership in favour of Moddibo.
Lawal described Suleiman as a “very competent and experienced gentleman” and argued that his replacement was unjustified.
He also used a comparison with the online marketplace Temu to mock the candidate-selection processes of both the APC and ADC.
According to Lawal, the ADC's choice of its presidential candidate also made Atiku appear like “a cheap product from TEMU.”
Beyond his political criticism, Lawal said he intended to challenge the alleged substitution in court.
He claimed that the decision violated provisions of the Electoral Act 2026, the ADC Constitution and the party's primary election guidelines.
“This criminal substitution which violates the Electoral Act 2026, the ADC Constitution, and the ADC Primary Elections Guidelines will be tested in the courts and it will fail woefully,” he said.
Lawal also predicted that Adamawa voters would reject what he described as an attempt to impose a candidate on the electorate.
Atiku and the ADC had not publicly responded to the allegations as of the time of filing this report.
