Southwest Airlines has announced a new policy prohibiting humanoid and animal-like robots from being transported on its aircraft, either as carry-on luggage or checked baggage.
The airline said the decision was made to enhance passenger safety following concerns over the handling of advanced robots and the risks associated with their large lithium-ion batteries.
The move comes as personal robots become increasingly common for research, business, and entertainment purposes.
According to the airline, the ban is aimed at reducing the potential danger posed by high-capacity lithium-ion batteries, which can overheat and cause fires if damaged or improperly handled.
While full-sized robots are no longer permitted on Southwest flights, smaller robotic devices and toys that meet existing battery and baggage regulations will still be allowed.
