Bolaji Omotayo Daramola (BOD) has expressed deep sympathy to the families, traders, business owners, and residents whose homes, businesses, and means of livelihood were devastated by today's flash flood across Ondo Kingdom. He described the incident as heartbreaking and prayed for strength, comfort, and quick recovery for everyone affected. While acknowledging the efforts of individuals and volunteers who have come to the aid of victims, BOD stressed that the people deserve more than sympathy after every disaster. He noted that no community should be forced to live with the fear that every heavy rainfall will result in loss of property and hardship.
BOD said it was unacceptable that flooding has become an annual experience in Ondo Kingdom despite repeated warnings and previous occurrences. According to him, the time has come for government at all levels to move beyond emergency relief and confront the root causes of the problem. He called on the Ondo State Government, relevant ministries and agencies, emergency management authorities, traditional institutions, community leaders, and development partners to immediately work together on sustainable flood control measures, including proper drainage systems, desilting of waterways, improved urban planning, and routine environmental maintenance. He warned that leadership must be measured by its ability to prevent avoidable disasters, not merely respond after lives and livelihoods have already been affected.
BOD further urged residents to remain calm, support one another, and cooperate with emergency responders while rescue and relief efforts continue. He reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for practical, people-centred solutions that protect lives, safeguard communities, and improve the wellbeing of the people of Ondo Kingdom. He maintained that this tragedy must become a turning point for decisive action, adding that every stakeholder has a responsibility to ensure that future generations do not continue to suffer the same avoidable disaster. The time to act is now.
