Residents of Olorunda Local Council Development Area (LCDA) could soon witness a major economic transformation as plans for the multi-billion-naira Ologe Mechanized Abattoir and Livestock Market gather momentum.
The project, when completed, is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, attract businesses, increase government revenue and position Olorunda as home to one of Nigeria's largest livestock processing centres.
To advance the project, the Executive Chairman of Olorunda LCDA, Hon. Ajose Peter Kumayon, on Thursday received the management of Transelector Abattoir Limited at the Council Secretariat in Iworo. The meeting focused on areas of collaboration that would speed up the completion of the Lagos State Government-approved project, which is already under construction.
Leading the company's delegation, the Managing Director of Transelector Abattoir Limited, Alhaji Mohammed Mai Kano Lawal, congratulated the Chairman on his election and said the visit was to officially brief the Council on the progress of the investment.
Lawal explained that the project covers 48 hectares of land and is being developed as a modern livestock processing and marketing centre that meets international standards.
According to him, the facility will include a modern livestock market, meat processing sections, 65 slaughtering points, holding areas for cattle, sheep, goats and poultry, veterinary and quarantine facilities, trailer parks, administrative offices, sanitation facilities and a network of internal roads connected to the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
He said the project is designed to improve meat processing in Nigeria by introducing cleaner, safer and more environmentally friendly operations than those found in many existing abattoirs.
Project Consultant, Dr. Adeyemi M. I., described the investment as a major economic breakthrough. He noted that while the popular Oko-Oba Abattoir in Agege occupies about 28 hectares, the Ologe project spans 48 hectares, making it one of the largest of its kind in the country.
He said the Agege Abattoir supports over 2,000 workers and handles billions of naira in transactions daily, expressing confidence that the Ologe facility would create thousands of jobs and generate substantial revenue for both Lagos State Government and Olorunda LCDA.
Dr. Adeyemi appealed for the Council's continued support, assuring that hygiene, environmental sustainability and modern operational standards remain key priorities of the project.
Speaking on the infrastructure component, Project Engineer, Engr. Hillary, disclosed that the development will include a dual carriageway, access roads and modern drainage systems. He appealed to the Council to partner with the company in constructing the access roads leading to the facility.
Also speaking, the Council Treasurer, Mrs. Awusinu Olayinka, welcomed the investment, describing it as a major opportunity for economic growth. She urged the company to give qualified indigenes of the host communities priority in employment and ensure its products and services remain affordable.
Responding, Alhaji Lawal said plans were already underway to engage concessionaires for different sections of the market. He added that the ongoing Badagry-Sokoto Highway would further improve access to the facility and boost commercial activities.
He also noted that Lagos State currently processes about 6,000 cattle daily, adding that Badagry's strategic location as an international border corridor gives the project enormous commercial potential.
In his remarks, Hon. Kumayon thanked Transelector Abattoir Limited for choosing Olorunda LCDA for the landmark investment.
The Chairman said he had earlier visited the project site and was impressed by the level of work already carried out. He requested the company's Bill of Quantities for the proposed access roads to enable the Council compare costs and explore possible areas of partnership.
He also advised the company to resolve issues relating to land encroachment and obtain all necessary approvals from the relevant government agencies.
Hon. Kumayon assured the delegation of the Council's support, stating that Olorunda LCDA would consider intervening in the construction of the access roads after the rainy season, provided the work meets approved engineering standards.
He expressed confidence that the project would open up new business opportunities, create employment, increase internally generated revenue and drive sustainable economic development across Olorunda LCDA, the Badagry Division and Lagos State.
The meeting ended with a presentation of the architectural design of the proposed Ologe Mechanized Abattoir and Livestock Market by Architect Al-Amin Gambo, who showcased the layout and key facilities planned for the modern livestock processing hub.
