According to a report by Daily Post, on Monday, July 6, 2026, former Borno State Governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, alleged that the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, is promoting ideas capable of dividing Nigeria.
Sheriff made the remarks while appearing as a guest on Politics Today, a current affairs programme aired by Channels Television on Monday.
During the interview, he responded to recent comments by Obi, who had called on President Bola Tinubu to resign over the country's worsening security challenges and economic hardship.
While addressing the issue, the former governor disagreed with Obi's position and questioned his commitment to the unity of Nigeria.
Sheriff argued that anyone seeking to become the country's president should clearly demonstrate loyalty to the nation as a whole rather than be associated with any movement or ideology that could be interpreted as promoting division.
He Said, “Peter Obi, up to this moment, is pursuing the division of Nigeria because he believes in Biafra.
Sheriff further claimed that Obi has consistently failed to publicly denounce the activities and objectives of the Biafra movement as well as the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
He maintained that the former Anambra State governor has not openly distanced himself from the agitation for Biafra, adding that such silence raises concerns about his political position on the issue.
Sheriff insisted that Obi should clearly state whether or not he supports the unity of Nigeria.
He argued that making such a declaration would remove doubts surrounding his stance and reassure Nigerians about his commitment to the country's indivisibility.
The former governor also stressed that anyone aspiring to occupy Nigeria's highest political office must place the nation's unity above every regional, ethnic or sectional interest.
According to him, a presidential hopeful should be seen as someone prepared to represent the interests of every Nigerian, regardless of background or location.
Sheriff maintained that leadership at the national level requires a firm commitment to preserving the country's unity, especially at a time when Nigeria is facing serious security and economic challenges.
He suggested that those seeking the presidency must convince citizens that they are dedicated to protecting the country's sovereignty and promoting national cohesion.
His comments came in reaction to Obi's recent call for President Bola Tinubu to step down, citing concerns over the current security situation and the state of the economy.
Sheriff, however, rejected Obi's criticism of the administration and instead questioned Obi's own political position regarding Nigeria's unity.
The interview has since generated discussions, as Sheriff used the opportunity to reiterate his view that anyone seeking to lead Nigeria must publicly affirm their commitment to the country's unity and distance themselves from any movement perceived as advocating its division.
