In 2020, while living in London, she found herself unable to visit a hair salon because of lockdown restrictions. Like millions of women, she decided to braid her own hair. What she expected to take a few hours turned into a four-day marathon.
When she finally finished, she wasn't simply relieved. One question kept replaying in her mind.
Why had hair braiding remained virtually unchanged for thousands of years, while industries such as sewing had been transformed by machines?
Most people would have accepted the experience as an unavoidable inconvenience. Yinka saw something different. She saw an opportunity waiting to be built.
She searched for a device that could make braiding faster. None existed.
Instead of moving on, she decided to create one.
Together with her co-founder, David Afolabi, Yinka embarked on a journey that would last four years. They spoke with more than 2,200 people who regularly wear braids, interviewed 200 professional hairstylists, and developed over 600 prototypes before arriving at a solution they believed could truly change the industry.
It was a long and demanding process, but they refused to let a common problem remain unsolved.
Yinka's background prepared her well for the challenge. She earned an MBA from Harvard Business School and a Master of Science in Engineering from Harvard's John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, a rare combination of engineering expertise and business leadership. Before launching HaloBraid, she also served as Head of Branding and Marketing at Nigerian lifestyle company Eve & Tribe, where she gained valuable experience in building trusted consumer brands.
Their breakthrough came in 2025 when HaloBraid won Harvard University's President's Innovation Challenge, securing $75,000 to further develop the technology.
That victory opened even bigger doors.
By June 2026, HaloBraid had raised $7 million in seed funding. The investment round was led by Alexis Ohanian's venture capital firm, Seven Seven Six, with AlleyCorp and Bling Capital also backing the company.
The innovation itself is designed to support, not replace, professional braiders. A stylist begins each braid by hand, just as they always have, before passing it to the HaloBraid device to complete the process. Early testing shows it can reduce braiding time by as much as 50 percent while helping to ease the physical strain that often leads to carpal tunnel syndrome, back pain, and other work-related injuries among hairstylists.
The problem HaloBraid addresses is enormous. An estimated eight billion hours are spent braiding hair around the world every year, with Black women accounting for much of that time.
Yinka's vision is simple yet powerful: what if technology could give Black women back a billion hours of their time every year?
That question transformed an everyday frustration into a mission with global impact.
Her story is a reminder that many of the world's greatest innovations begin with ordinary problems. The recurring complaint from customers, the slow process everyone has accepted, or the daily inconvenience people have learned to tolerate could become the next breakthrough if someone chooses to solve it.
Today, Yinka Ogunbiyi stands as another example of Nigerian excellence on the global stage. Through innovation, determination, and years of persistence, she has built a robotics company tackling a challenge that had been overlooked for generations, proving that world-changing ideas often begin with a simple question: "What if there was a better way?"
