Former Borno State Governor, Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff, has said Nigeria's vast mineral resources are drawing increasing international attention, arguing that the country's strategic importance extends far beyond crude oil.
Speaking during an interview with Channels TV, Sheriff stressed that nearly every part of Nigeria possesses valuable mineral deposits that could strengthen the country's economy if properly harnessed.
According to him, "All our villages and states have mineral resources, have gold, and nations are interested."
The former governor made the remark while explaining why he believes Nigeria occupies a significant position in global affairs. He argued that the country's natural wealth has made it an important nation for major world powers, adding that this is one reason the Federal Government continues to engage in diplomatic discussions with influential countries.
Sheriff praised President Bola Tinubu's foreign engagements, saying the administration is negotiating with global powers in ways that could benefit Nigeria. He maintained that international cooperation is necessary to address some of the country's challenges, particularly insecurity, which he described as a complex issue requiring both domestic and international collaboration.
He also linked Nigeria's security situation to broader global interests, suggesting that the country's abundant mineral resources have increased foreign attention. According to him, this reality makes strategic diplomacy even more important.
The former governor further argued that official state visits and diplomatic invitations extended to President Tinubu demonstrate growing international acceptance of Nigeria's leadership. He insisted such engagements should not be dismissed, saying they could open doors for stronger economic partnerships and investment opportunities.
Sheriff concluded that Nigeria's future depends not only on its oil reserves but also on effectively developing its mineral resources, strengthening cooperation with international partners, and ensuring that the country's vast natural wealth contributes to national development and long-term stability.
