The controversy erupted after screenshots containing details reportedly linked to the actor’s voter registration information surfaced online amid political disputes surrounding the FCT primaries.
Emeka Ike, who was reportedly involved in the primaries, expressed outrage over the incident and accused individuals connected to the political process of unlawfully accessing and circulating confidential voter information. The actor specifically threatened legal action against an aide linked to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over the alleged dissemination of the information. Meanwhile, INEC has already confirmed that it has launched an investigation into the incident involving alleged misuse of authorised access credentials connected to its Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) database.
The electoral commission stated that preliminary findings showed there was no external hacking or breach of its broader ICT infrastructure, adding that the information was allegedly accessed using valid credentials assigned to authorised personnel.
INEC also disclosed that its internal audit trail had identified the user account involved while the Department of State Services (DSS) has commenced a parallel investigation into the matter.
The incident has sparked widespread debate over data protection, cybersecurity and the handling of sensitive voter information within Nigeria’s electoral process.
Observers say the controversy could increase pressure on INEC to strengthen internal access controls and accountability mechanisms ahead of future elections.
