Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike has reportedly endorsed Alabo Dakorinama George Kelly as his preferred candidate for the 2027 Rivers State governorship.
The decision was reportedly finalized during a high-stakes, closed-door meeting on Monday, May 4, 2026, in Port Harcourt, attended by key political figures and ex-militant leaders like Asari Dokubo and Ateke Tom. George Kelly is expected to contest for the governorship under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
A veteran technocrat and loyalist to Wike, Alabo George Kelly previously served as the Rivers State Commissioner for Works and came second to current Governor Siminalayi Fubara in the 2022 PDP primaries.
This move signals a formal break between Wike and Governor Fubara, following a long-running political dispute. Fubara has recently defected to the APC himself, meaning the two may face a direct challenge within the same party structure.
Insiders describe the move as a strategy for Wike to maintain political dominance in Rivers State while serving in his federal role in Abuja.
