Big Tech is now playing God with the environment. Google’s Debug project is seeking federal approval to release up to 32 million lab-grown male Culex mosquitoes across California.
These Wolbachia-infected males will mate with wild females, producing offspring that don’t survive. The goal is to crash local mosquito populations without pesticides or direct gene editing of the released bugs. The EPA is reviewing the experimental permit and taking public comments until June 5.
No release sites have been named yet, but the idea of a Silicon Valley giant flooding communities with millions of insects has sparked widespread alarm. While sold as disease control, many see it as another risky, unaccountable experiment by unelected tech elites and bureaucrats on everyday Americans.
