In a recent interview on Arise TV, former Vice President of Nigeria and presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, spoke during a live political discussion where he analysed Nigeria’s regional political dynamics and the influence of key opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
During the interview, Atiku stated, “The Southeast is Peter Obi’s political base, while the South-South is the political base of Rotimi Amaechi.” He made the remark while discussing how regional alignments continue to shape electoral strategies and coalition-building in Nigeria.
He was referring to former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, whom he described as having strong influence in the Southeast, and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, whom he associated with significant political support in the South-South region.
Atiku explained that understanding regional political structures remains essential in Nigerian elections, where voter mobilisation often reflects historical, ethnic, and geopolitical patterns rather than purely ideological alignment.
He further argued that successful national coalitions must take into account these regional strengths, stressing that no single political bloc can win a national election without strategic alliances across geopolitical zones.
The former vice president added that opposition unity discussions must be grounded in a realistic assessment of where different political actors derive their influence, noting that misreading regional dynamics could weaken electoral prospects.
Atiku concluded by emphasising that Nigeria’s evolving political landscape requires cooperation among major opposition figures, insisting that coalition-building remains the most viable path toward challenging the ruling party in future elections, particularly as political competition intensifies ahead of 2027.
