NASA found parts of its own spacecraft on Mars

 
NASA’s Perseverance rover has discovered a mysterious piece of its own landing gear over a mile away from its crash site, sparking questions about how the debris traveled across the Martian surface.

During its exploration of the Jezero Crater, NASA’s Perseverance rover encountered a familiar but unexpected sight: a shiny scrap of thermal blanket wedged into a Martian rock. The agency identified the material as a fragment from the descent stage—the rocket-powered "jet pack" that safely lowered the rover to the surface in February 2021. The discovery has puzzled mission scientists because the descent stage intentionally crashed nearly two kilometers away from the rover’s current location. NASA officials are now debating whether the debris landed there during the initial impact or was carried across the desolate landscape by powerful Martian winds.

This encounter is part of a growing collection of "spacecraft archaeology" being documented on the Red Planet. Earlier this year, the Ingenuity helicopter captured aerial views of the mission's discarded parachute and backshell, providing invaluable data for future landing maneuvers.
