Babachir Lawal, while speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Expressed skepticism about the rationale behind the ongoing coastal road project.
He questioned the economic and practical justification for constructing the road, suggesting that alternative transport solutions may have been more efficient and cost-effective.
During the interview, Lawal argued that Nigeria’s coastal transportation challenges could have been better addressed by investing in maritime infrastructure rather than prioritizing a road network along the coastline.
According to him, improving waterways and expanding sea transport would have provided a more sustainable and less expensive option for moving goods and people across coastal regions.
He further maintained that developing inland and coastal water transport systems could reduce congestion on roads, lower transportation costs, and enhance trade efficiency between coastal cities.
In his view, such an approach would have delivered broader economic benefits compared to the construction of a large-scale coastal highway project.
In his words, he stated: “I don't understand the purpose of the coastal road, what he should have done is improve the water ways, improve transportation by sea along the coast, it's cheaper.
