Tensions are rising after Ghana formally summoned South Africa’s envoy over a series of troubling xenophobic incidents targeting its citizens.
According to Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, one particularly disturbing case occurred in KwaZulu-Natal, where a Ghanaian — legally residing in South Africa — was confronted and told to “go back home and fix your country.”
Videos circulating online show scenes of harassment against Ghanaians, sparking outrage and diplomatic concern.
South Africa, known as the continent’s most industrialised economy, has long attracted migrants from across Africa. However, with unemployment sitting above 30%, the country has experienced recurring waves of anti-migrant protests — sometimes escalating into violence.
This latest development raises serious questions:
